China is still quite far off from becoming the next superpower. The American military hegemony is still by far the strongest on the face of the earth. China really can't compare. However, by mid-century the notion of China as another superpower is a legitimate query. The answer to if they will dictate world policy like the US - is NO. Although both China and America's economy will both serve as dominate powers, foreign policy is one of the biggest differences between China and the US. China has, for hundreds of years...(going back to Genghis Kahn and the Mongols) been a very protectionist country. It is ingrained in them to stand up against foreign invaders, and to keep the motherland strong - through its people. The US has not been invaded, pillaged, looted in its history...hardly at all actually. Therefore, American aggression stems out of having nop empathy to what it is like to have a war happen in your own country. Insofar as China will be a superpower, it will be a superpower that respects all countries and does not meddle in the internal happening/politics...which the US has become notorious for (esp. latter 20thc.)
Right now, Beijing has 48 African leaders in its capital to discuss: investment, trade and politics. While China does not support terrorism, or fund it in any way, they do respect soveriegn nations right to develop in a peaceful way, with a government chosen by their people.
On the though of an American/Chinese war. While the 20thc century was a century of large nation states fighting for imperialist reasons, the 21st c. will be characterized more by large nation states combatting terrorism/nuclear proliferation and other uprisings around the world that seek to change the status quo. China and the US's economies today are so interdependent, that any war between the two, would have debilitating effects on both countries. Something that neither country wants. Whether you like it or not, China and the US are allies. I know this is difficult for most Americans to except...especially with the trade blockade still in effect against Cuba...but communist China is now an ally to America. The USA supports the one-China policy of Taiwan, Tibet, and scores of other issues that could potentially strike a rift between the two. Likewise, China has said it is commited to fighting terrorism.
China and the USA will never go to war with each other.
It is simply not in their interests, and would be catastrophic for both countries.

I may be wrong with all I'm about to say, but then again, I'm Mexican, so I have my own politics problems:

China dictating world policy would be the logical thing to happen when they become The Superpower... with a big IF, I think.

Because we can expect an economic and politic struggle in a low level, depending of course of the Chinese ideological (or political, meaning by imposition) expansion, as it happened with the USSR when all of us weren't born yet. That could lead to yet another Cold War.

Would that War escalate into full aggression? We can't tell, a lot of things can happen in between.

What I don't understand is the exact meaning of US "aspirations of world etcetera". What do you mean aspirations? Aren't economic, politic and cultural influence in Bush's Fight For Freedom World Order world domination enough?

Dear European,

Good question. In all liklyhood their is a strong possibility that China will try to dominate world affairs. It's resources and population are vast. Make Chinese friends. Learn Chinese. In the end America will survive. Who knows what the furture will bring.

As long as the US continues to have 5,000 nuclear missiles China will at best share the dictating of world policy with the US.

they are already doing this with north Korea and Iran . what do you think the Chinese will accept you into their country as a member of the Communist party . you would be just like the rest of us so how about rooting for your own country a little . unless you want to live in a disease over crowded country and have a meal of rice and vegs every day .so many peoples think that the usa can be taken so dam easy man your wronge it would mean the end of time for every if china tried to attack the usa .

Yep they will threaten to take their junk off the market, and people
like you do not believe in buying made in the U.S.A will give into
anything they want. Because you look at costs and not quality.

I'm more interested in what will happen to Europe. I'll bet they continue to be irrelevant.
