Magna Carta is thought of as the corner-stone of liberty and the chief defence against arbitrary and unjust rule in England. It contains sweeping statements of principle, and is a series of concessions wrung from the unwilling King John by his rebellious barons in 1215.

Magna Carta established for the first time a very significant constitutional principle: that the power of the king could be limited by a written grant.

The portion of the Magna Charta most relevant to our day and age is worded "...no free man shall be taken or imprisoned or disseised [dispossess unlawfully of real property] or exiled or in any way destroyed except by the lawful judgment of their peers or by the law of the land.” The Law of the Land was also known as Habeas Corpus. The Magna Charta led to further strengthening of Habeas Corpus; in 1679, the English Parliament enacted the Habeas Corpus Act. This was the primary means by which individual liberty was empowered at the expense of the arbitrary exercise of power by the state

In 2006, the American Congress and President George Bush struck down Habeas Corpus in the American judicial system and stepped backward 300 years in the world's search for freedom and liberty. Now any American can be legally "disappeared" by the government - the Founding Father's are sobbing in their graves.
