Is play-doh a solid, liquid, or a gas?

Gasses are categorized as being able to expand to fill their given environment. So Play-Doh is not a gas.

Liquids are categorized as being able to flow, and transport waves. However imagine a sea of Play-Doh. Could you imagine waves? If you try to apply enough force to cause such a wave in Play-Doh, you will permanently disfigure your model. If you take Play-Doh and smack it against the wall, it will fall off, not splash. Therefore Play-Doh is not a liquid.

Play-Doh therefore has to be a solid mixture. In fact if you want to get really technical it is a supersaturated aqueous solution of water - so saturated that it is a solid.

A Gas will always fill the space that its in and take the shape of the container it is in. A liquid will always take the shape of the container it is in but it will not expand to fill it like a gas will. A solid however will not automatically take the shape of its container nor will it expand to fill it. Therefore since play doh doesn't expand on its own, and it doesnt move from the shape you mold it into, play-doh would be considered a solid.

Play-doh is a solid because it doesn't neccessarily take the shape of the container unless you make it, you can hold it in your hands without dripping and it does not escape into the air as would a gas.
