I had the same problems on my od computer.
You see, the main problem with sims 2 is that most computers cannot handle the graphics, sometimes not even the standerd RAM it says that it requires which is 250 MB RAM. The problem could be
1.) You have a RAM lower then 250MB
2.) You are runnin gout of computer memory
3.) Your computer is outdated
4.) Your computer does not have every requirement intended for the game.
Check at sims2.com for more information.
By solving my problem I had to get a whole new computer because the one I had was out of date.
You might want a computer with a RAM of 300 or something. Like the new Apple computer, the fastest in the world but it's $$$pricey$$$
Msot important, even though you installed a great new program into the computer your computer could be out of date. Which I've probably said a billion times by now. When I first installed Sims 2 on my new computer it worked out kind of slow, but each time I installed a new expansion (praise nightlife! down with university!) the graphics went faster. Weird.

Check the Sims official website http://www.sims.ea.com and check for patches. Since you bought it the first day it came out, it might have bugs in the coding.
