Good question,....
Firstly, I would like to say that comparisons are inevitable. People will always compare both of these films, because that is just natural to do so.
But, I believe that we should see the new version of Umrao Jaan, which is played by Aishwarya Rai, as an individual and different product than the older version, acted by Rekha.
One thing which should be considered is, that these are two actresses are from two different generations, playing the role of the same women. Hence, differences will automatically occur in the movies, but without differences and changes, wouldn't the movie appear boring and ordinary?
If Aishwarya Rai would do everything allike to what Rekha had done in the original movie, then what is the point of re-making the movie?
Thus, I think we should learn to appreciate Aishwarya Rai's effort in acting in the skin of Umrao Jaan as a parallel line to the acting perfomed by Rekha, and not to join these two lines together and to view them as actresses who have given effort to play this character.
