A lawyer represents a client, and provides legal advice.

The lawyer is required to pursue the goals of the client, according to the applicable laws in the state/province/country you are in.

If your lawyer is not doing what you want them to do, and they are not telling that some law would prevent them from doing so, then the lawyer is not doing their job. That could rise to the level of malpractice, but it is also grounds for an ethical complaint.

If you want, you can contact your local state bar association (in the US, other countries have similar licensing bodies) and file a complaint. The bar association will tell you what your options are, based on the local laws.

At the very least, you always have the option of firing the attorney and getting another one. Explain what happened, and try not to hold all lawyers responsible for the unethical actions of a few.

A lawyer helps to get redressal through court of law, by legal proceedings, when there is a necessity to settle disputes or even helps in out-of-court settlements. It depends on what you have told your lawyer to do, or what is the understanding between you and your lawyer.
