Kim Jong-il is a megalomaniac in charge of a corrput and shady nations. He is thirsty for power, therefore, he will not attack South Korea due to U.S. and S.K. retaliation which would destroy is regime and put him in jail.

America isnt worried about him attacking another country, the government is worried about him giving nuclear weapons and/or technology to Iran, which will attack another country, or giving it to a terrorist group. Although i do agree with you that the press turned it into "the world is about to end" coverage.

I think the biggest concern is the mental health of Kim Jong-il. Megalomaniacs are not real adept at logical thinking outside of the box they have created for themselves. There is no one to put limits on him, such as we have in our government, and that is a dangerous situation. We cannot assume that the man thinks logically enough to consider the results of his action should he send a nuke in any direction. Egomania can distort anyone's thinking and he is a prime example. Also, one of the biggest fears is that his hatred of the United States will cause him to sell nuclear power to those groups that wish us all annihilated.
