If one knows that they will get an "F" as a final grade in a class, is it better to drop it with a "W", or just get the "F" (lowering GPA), and which way would allow the re-taking of the class the following semester in hopes of passing it that time.

If I drop the class, I will have a 3.0 gpa,

if I get the F, it will lower it to 2.5 gpa

It's always better to withdraw than to allow yourself to fail. You may be able to retake the class if you fail (check the policy at your school) but you will almost definitely be able to take it if you drop the course. If you take the F, even if you retake the course and get a better grade, the F stays on your transcripts (at least that's how it worked at my university).

Totally go with the w - you can always re-take the class even if you withdraw and have a chance of improving your GPA. But if you take the F, you lower your GPA and that is hard to recover from.

Professors at my school always recommend a withdrawal to students doing poorly in the class. Not only does and F look bad on your transcripts it brings your GPA down and effects your financial aid.

It really depends on your current school, and the future grad schools you're thinking about applying to. For me, I got an F in one course, so that stays on my record. I was so upset but my nursing undergraduate counselor told me that most nursing programs would 've seen a "W" or "INC" (incomplete) as worse than an F.
