The complexity of a character, or a character that I can really connect with and understand. Someone I feel is very similar to me in situations and personality. The characters in a book are really important to me and the story. Without good characters you don't have a good book. I love it when your favorite character is in a very complex situation and your curious as to what the character will do. I like to feel what the character is feeling, If the character is very unhappy or stressed then it will make me the same way throughout the story, I'll change moods with the character - if it's a good character, or good to me. Not everyone is going to connect with the same character. So a variety of characters and personalities make a book great. When I really get into a certain character I'll start to think like the character, even when i'm not reading the book. It takes a really good writer to do that, but it makes a book really exciting. A character without real feelings is boring and unrealistic.

The character has to relate to the reader. That's the most important thing. That's how they become timeless. Someone agonizing over their prideful choices (Pride and Prejudice). Someone feeling as if the world's on their shoulders and they have to save "their world" (Harry Potter). The reader has to feel as if they've felt he same way as the main character. Personally, I insist on a sense of humor and irony. I think that's what's gotten me through my life.

I would say that the character has to go throght something and make it a real problem. And has similar problem that everyone else goess through. As long as the book keeps me guessing on what going to happen next.

Written stories with real heroes often appeals to my senses and make it memorable to me. Those heroes and villains that I can connect my life with. Like those characters that their life is related with mine....I love to read about psychological charaters because i am a pdychologist. i also love to read strories about courtroom heroes because i am a frustrated lawyer.... most of all i love to read novels of John Grisham because like me, he was a frustrated lawyer and most of his stories were all about courtroom drama.
