ONE BALL is all a pitcher needs to warm-up, regardless of the number of pitches.

It's not as many as you think.
I play baseball and I pitch.
You are only allowed 3-5 pitches on the mound before a game because you had already "gotten loose" in the bullpen, therefore you only need 3-5 pitches on the real mound to gert used to it.
After those 3-5 pitches the catcher throws it down to second base, just to get his arm warmed up.

In Little League, I give the pitcher only 8 pitches on a warm day, 10 on a cold one. In the majors it's different because they need to eat time with all the stupid advertisements, but I'm pretty sure the technicallity is 2 minutes worth.

Since I play softball and watch baseball on television. I would have to say that the pitcher would have to throw 9 to 12 pitches before warming up.

The pitcher can take as many warm-up pitches as he wants in the bullpen before the game. But when he comes onto the field, he gets eight before delivering a pitch to the first batter.
