I really love turkey but even a small one is usually too big for our family and we only eat the white meat so I dont know if it is worth the hassle of doing a whole Turkey dinner or going with something easier and just go buy a few dozen tamales.

Have you ever heard of "leftovers"?
And your family can't handle a small turkey but can polish off "a few dozen" tamales?
Okay, you like Mexican food, we get the picture.
But Thanksgiving is celebrated with turkey, not tamales.
Tamales are for Cinco de Mayo.

Turkey is an American tradition. But there was an episode of Raymond where Debra cooked a fish, and it was a big hit...so do whatever makes your family happy.
