im getting new tires and i have 205/40/17 and these are 205/40/17 . i think the middle number is thickness?????but which one is thicker?

let me break it down for u so u can understand and this applies to ALL TIRES EXCEPT larger tires like 31x10.50
P or LT means passenger or light truck tire
205 means tread width in milimeters
40 means percentage of tread width also called the profile of the tire or side wall heighth
R means the tire is a radial
17 means the diameter of the RIM Not the tire

Yes it will make a huge difference. The middle number is actually the size of the side wall. Example: 205/50/17. The 50 means 50% of 205 that is 102.5. Now take a 205/70/17. That is 143.5. Over 40 mm difference. The 205 is 205 millimeters wide

Okay the first number (205) is the height. The second number (40) is the width. The third number (17) is the rim diameter.

Your tire is 205mm wide and 40% of that (82mm) high, and fits a 17" rim.

Don't ask me why they mixed metric and imperial.
