I work in the restaurant equipment industry, and will never eat out again. Do you know that you can, and should, ask to see the kitchen?

I work in a restaurant. A very good restaurant. We have been rated #1 for 3 yrs - open for 6 yrs. Other three yrs were #2. Health inspector pops in and says very good things about us. Kitchen crew who come in say this is the cleanest restuarant they've ever worked in, so everyone tries to keep it that way. Very small turnaround in kitchen & front of the house. That means alot too. Guess it's just good management (which I'm not, just so you know) People I work for know what they're doing, and it shows!
So, to answer your question, I didn't know that, it's a good thing to know, though. Guess I better pass that on! Good question!

I used to have a buffet lunch every Saturday at a local popular Indian restaurant. Once I asked how they made the Tandoori chicken and the chef came out and took me into the kitchen and showed me the Tandoor oven. It seemed to be clean. I didn't realize that you can ask to see the kitchen in a restaurant. I don't think I'd have the nerve to ask even though I'd like to.

Not all restaurant kitchens are disgusting. I used to work in the kitchen in a certain restaurant and to this day that is still my favorite restaurant of all time.

I used to waitress. The restaurants I worked in were very clean. But I did work at a meat packing plant and couldn't eat beef for 6 months.

My kitchen could be seen from the hostess stand. No secrets there, and always got good marks on my inspections. The customers graded me more on the cleanliness of my bathrooms. If the bathroom was clean, they knew the kitchen was clean. Seriously!

And I had no shame in letting anyone see my kitchen.

You answered your own question. I don't really want to know because I wouldn't eat there again. If you think about it, there are many things that would change your life if you took the time to notice. For example, what really happens at a chicken farm? Do you really think any food you buy at the store is bug-free. Bugs get into every factory and food product our world makes. Some things are better left unseen.

I can't say I really wanted to see the kitchen. Most don't even seem like they have time to keep the kitchen as clean as they should. I don't even like to go to there bathrooms. I rather not see there kitchen.
