Why do a lot of Irish people have blonde and red hair?

I have green eyes and dark, brown hair and I can't figure it out. I read some stories about the Moors living in Ireland, but I don't know if that's true or not.

You are incorrect in your initial premise. Most Irish people actually have the odd combination of dark brown to jet black hair and blue eyes. There is a high percentage of people with varying shades of red (Real blond hair is actually quite rare amongst the Irish...At least amongst Catholics. True blond hair is commonest amongst Irish Protestants of English ancestry), but they are nowhere near a majority. This trait came to Ireland mainly from Viking, Norman and later English and Scots settlement. In actuality the English are more red haired than the Irish.

It's because of a type of evolutionary mechanism called founder effect. Founder effect occurs when a part of the population breaks off to start a new population. In this case, the majority of people who came to Ireland from elsewhere way back during the hunter/gatherer days had red hair and green eyes. Now most people from that region have the same traits.

This is also why there is a prevalance of disease in certain ethnic groups or races and not in others.
