when they accept you as an employee, not before. They will ask for the number not the card until you get employed by them. They need it to prove your eligibility to work in the US.

When you are hired, you'll need to show two acceptable forms of identification. The ones they usually ask for are your social security card and your drivers license. If you have a US passport, that's acceptable for both.

Your prospective employer may want to do background checks before they hire you. If so, you will have to sign a release which may include your social security number.

Yes, typically an employer will ask for your social security number along with your driver's license in order to conduct a background check before giving you an official offer.

You are not obligated to give your social security number until you have been hired.

Most employers who do background checks, make the job offer "contingent upon" a background check and sometimes drug test.

They have no right to require your social security number if they have not offered you a job.

It's one possible form of identification you can use for the I-9 form, in which case they'll want to actually SEE the card. You also need to put the number on your W-4 forms.

Depends on the job. Don't give it out to a company you don't trust.

Most companies need your social to verify your identity and check your criminal history.
