The oil drain plug is a 17mm hex head bolt. Get a 17mm wrench and pull towards you. Do not push on the fastener, you could lose your balance. If it has been over tightened you may need a 17mm socket with a breaker bar.

You need to jack the car up and place it on jack stands, then get under it with a box end 14mm wrench if I remember correctly, tehn place your drain pan under the hole and turn the wrench so you are loosening the the plug to the left... always remember, Lefty loosie, Righty tighty. Once the plug is out let it drain into the pan you placed under it. While it is draining you should remove the oil filter and let the oil drain from it also. Then purchase a new oil filter from the local parts store, they should help you find the right one. They will need to know your year, make, model, and engine size. Then replace the filter (make sure you put oil on the seal before installing),as tight as you can get it by hand, you may need to get a new gasket for your plug, honda uses a special fibre plug, so get a new one from them they are cheap, less than a dollar. Then replace the plug, once it is tight enough to touch the metal you should give it about a half to three quarters of a turn to tighten. Then lower car, add oil, start and check for leaks.

I would suggest becoming a member of the honda civic forum. Anytime you need help regarding your ride they will give you good information. (saved me thousands of dollars doing little jobs myself rather than taking it to a shop) There are actually quite a bit of females on there.

if its contained in the exhaust its gotta be coming from a plug... possibly the top gasket is shot? it couldnt be the rear important... it wouldnt be getting contained in the exhaust if it became that... in spite of the indisputable fact that the white smoke might want to be a nasty O2 sensor, i had that challenge in a ford a million/2 ton.
