It's unknown where the Democrats got the donkey symbol, some say it came from insults during an election many years ago.

The Republicans got their elephant symbol from a political cartoon by Thomas Nast, published in Harper's Weekly on 7 November 1874. They decided to use it as a mascot.

Their mascots don't represent their parties believes or practices.

In the past when a large number of the public was illiterate symbols were used so that people would know who they were voting for. The reason for the use of donkey and elephant is not known to me but the reason they are used is known. Some countries use colors on thier ballots for the same reason.

I may be wrong but I think the elephant mascot signifies "big camp" or other similar public slogan-ism.
The mule or Donkey story I really don't know.
Because I am actually more interested in a party's action than its public relationships handling of the of those actions, or commonly refered to as "spin".

Jackasses and Donkeys are two different animals. Donkeys are strong and stubborn. An Elephant is the worlds largest land animal that is afraid of a mouse. Go figure.

The elephant was chosen because it is know to have a long memory as do most Republicans. The donkey was chosen cause it is know to be stubborn as are most Dem's.

what is worse than the animal images is the fact that few if any really realize the 3 stars on the Republican banner are actually 3 upside down stars.....the devils star.
