On our business delivery car which is 1998 Ford Contour. The repair shop just called and said 670.00.
It's a lot! Is that right, or even close to being right?

Need more info please.
Is this on a home unit? Self contained? split unit?
If automotive, fitted to a Ford, A Rolls Royce or a chilled 40' container lorry.
Need a bit more of a clue if you want meaningful answers.

This one is not a big problem to fix. The bearing is in the clutch assembly itself. It lets the clutch spin freely when the ac is not turned on so the fan belt can turn without making the compressor pump. Do not have to remove freon from system to fix unless the compressor can't be moved out of the way enough to get a clutch puller tool on it. Also mechanic has to have a line of sight on the shaft of the compressor to remove and reinstall the snap rings holding the clutch on once the bolt and front clutch plate is removed. Mechanic can tell you this before they do the job. Clutch should be well under 200 bucks at standard auto parts store and along with a bolt in the center there is a snap ring that keep the assembly in place behind the front clutch disc. Any mechanic shop should be able to change just the clutch with bearing and if they won't you need another shop. Requires special tools so you most likely wouldn't do it yourself. Ac clutch tool is probably 60 bucks or so for the one that fits your series of compressor on Fords. I would figure on 200 bucks neighborhood on labor.

sounds like the front seal on the compressor is bad. The good news is that is not to bad to fix. The bad news is they have to remove all the freon and oil from the ac compressor and have it recharged.
depending on who does the work for you...you are looking at upwards of $200 for the complete job...unless you know a good mechanic...and then this depends on the car.
If the AC compressor is readily accessible...it may be somewhat less.

A/c Work is generally very expensive, mainly due to the high parts costs. I work for GM and I see these super high prices everyday. It bites, but it's a necessary evil due to the fact we all want A/C. Good luck

Depends on the make and model of your vehicle. But you are looking at pulling the freon out of the system, replacing the compressor, vaccuuming the system, and recharging it.

you can either rebuild the compressor or replace it much cheaper to rebuild it and will last just as long as a new one
