First, child labor is a fact of life, as it means the difference between hunger and food. If the parents are affluent enough, the children need not work but that requires the parents being able to earn sufficient to support the family. All parents want their children to be educated and prosper, but the hard reality is that much of the world lives at poverty or border-line poverty and the kids have to pitch in. I live in Asia and child-labor is common, but it is not the sweat-shops where illegals are literally chained to their jobs. It is more of a family effort to keep the wolves from the door. One boy I know rises at 5 am and plucks chickens until 8 am then hurries home to get ready for school...and gets no pay, but his family has managed in this way to send two others to the university. His turn will come because of the family effort and child labor...he is 11 years old. They are paid about 20 cents US for each chicken and universities are not cheap. Do-gooder attitudes are fine if you have money. As we say in China, 'No money, No talk'. Even aged grandfathers and grandmothers take part in making ends meet. Middle-class morality is a luxury that few of the third world countries can afford.
