all the energy comes from the sun....plants turn it into a form that is useful to animals...so a carnivore eats a smaller animal who may be an herbivore who feeds exclusively on plants...plants that used photosynthesis to turn solar energy to food!

Plants convert the energy to a form of stored food, like starch or sugars.

Then the animals that eat these plants convert the food they eat to fats. Same goes for the carnivores.

Approximately 1/10 of the energy is transfered to each level. For example, if plants produced 1 unit of energy, herbivores would receive 0.1 unit and 1st level carnivores 0.01.

Easy. Plants photosyhthesize and make starch. Herbivores eat the plants for the starch. Carnivores eat the herbivores. Done.
