because when my boss or a co-worker makes a joke, it would be awkward if i didnt pretend to laugh and then we would probably all be sat in silence. plus when i pretend to laugh - it takes the attention away from the fact that im not actually doing anything!

I totally don't agree with that. But the truth is that employees in office constantly will have a real good laugh but to face up with employer these laugh seems to fades away immediately. Its a regular trend everywhere. Just try to imagine what an employer may have in mind seeing such a sight, it's just a natural effect.
