It is a word the meaning of which has not been changed by the addition of any prefixes or suffixes. example:
love is the root of unloved (prefix 'un") as well as loveless (suffix "less")

The original, basic word, without prefixes or suffixes,
e.g. think - unthinking
organise - reorganisation
