I don't think you can logically apply a "smartest" label to any one race. Some individuals are more intelligent than others.

Japan places a much higher value on academic achievement from an early age, than most other developed countries
It doesn't make them smarter, just creates an environment where natural intelligence is nourished and intellectual growth is rewarded.

I would definetely say the Japenese. American students think they are smarter than other countries, because this is what the media portrays. In reality, America may have the money to do something about education, but the USA really doesn't stress education enough. There isn't a work ethic like those in other countries because there is no desire to. The Japenese are obviously smarter. If US took test like they do in Japan in the same grade, they wouldn't be able to do it. America is cocky but not better. The American public school system is a gamble. What they can do for it, is based upon funding. Which they pull according to the success of the students of the school. Which helps nothing because the smarter get smarter and the dumber stay "dumb." Anyway Japan works harder, and is definitely "smarter."

No nationality is smarter than another. It depends on how much an individual applies themselves. The Japanese seem smarter because they are very strict on education. America, for example, could care less about education for its people.

if you look at OLD stereotypes, the concensus was that japanese citizens, natives, if you will, are supposedly more intelligent than amercians. in truth, they're no better than we are. we just have a different social construct. our values are different from theirs, as a whole, and in general only, and we have a society that's largely based on shame and competition. if we aren't "successful," we feel shame. i don't know what the philosophy is for the japanese, but my impression is that they feel more shame at not being successful than we do. in truth, all the countries in the world have different values, so to each native of each country, there is some sense of pride and nationalism, hence, different qualities each country boasts about. spain has a siesta every day, as does italy, where all businesses shut down from about 2 or 3 in the afternoon for "relaxation" time, then return to work after two to three hours, and end their days at seven or eight pm. not necessarily "smarter" or "better" to do it that way, it's just that that way works for those countries. i would have to vote for the "smarter" being we americans. we are more cognizant of one another's needs, and that in itself makes us "smarter." good luck on your assignment!!

The Japenese spend more time on the education system and education their students. Academics is stressed there much more than it is in the United States, where sports seems to be stressed rather strongly. Values are different. They value education much more. In America, even if you do not excel in your studies, you can still become a millionaire by playing sports. And I agree with the other answers, Japenese does have much newer technology than the U.S.

An American lives in Japan. Do you think Japanese sell American cars? I doubt. So he buys a Japanese car. Who's smarter?

I spent time in Japan...the japanese people spend a lot of time at work and they are strict. They study hard in school and take pride in their work. So I think that is why they are smarter then us.
