I am 35 weeks pregnant and my doctor said that he wants to induce at 38 weeks because I "have a large baby". Is this normal, or is my doctor just in a hurry to get the baby here? I don't have high blood pressure or anything like that, just larger than other women that are 35 weeks along. Has this happened to anyone else?

I agree with the second answer on here. Your doctor is probably just trying to make sure you don't have to push out a 10+ pound baby. If you are built small then you may not be able to push the baby out if it gets too large. My son was induced. I was 40 weeks, but I had it for different circumstances - my husband was overseas in Iraq and came home on leave right around my due date in hopes that I could be induced. If you are really concerned about it and it doesn't feel right to you then talk to your doctor about it and if you still don't feel right, then get a second opinion. I think he is probably just trying to save you from doing all the pushing and such for hours on your own at 40 weeks and then end up having to have a c-section because the baby is too big. Good luck!

if your baby is large it may indicate that the dates are off. 38 weeks is a safe time to induce because the lungs(the last thing to develop) are finally fully developed. Your doctor would not want to induce if he did not think it was safe for you or the baby. If the dates are off and your placenta gets to old, it can start to "rot". it sounds gross, but the placenta only lasts a certain amount of time after the baby is fully developed and it has done its job. when the placenta starts this process it can be dangerous for the baby. maybe this is a bit of to much info, but don't worry, by the time you get to the 38 weeks... you will be grateful that you are having the baby. Mine are always a week late, I would love to have mine at least on time. good luck. and congrats!

Im actually getting induced at 38 weeks too but thats because there is a problem with the bub and they need to surgery on her. Ive heard of alot women being induced before 40 weeks, there is always a reason behind it being done. Good luck anyways

Induction at 38 weeks is not normally done unless there is a problem with the baby, such as the baby is in distress or not developing properly. I'd get another opinion if I were you. If you end up having a baby that's larger than about 8.5 pounds your doctor might elect to do a c-section.

Ultrasounds are notorious for being a bad way to estimate the size of a baby. They can be off as much as a pound and 1/2 either way. Trust in your body -- it knows how long to "cook" your baby. If you are planning to breastfeed, studies show that babies induced before 40 weeks many times have trouble latching on properly, that is one of the last instincts to develop.

Your doc just wants to fit you into his schedule. I had an induction w/ my first because I got impatient. It was HORRIBLE. I ended up getting an epidural.. I wanted to go natural so bad. Hours and hours and hours

My- second I did natural & I would do it over again anyday. It was a wonderful labor & delivery

alot of doctirs do it...he is thinking of you and of how hard a time will might have pushing out the baby plus the with large babies there is a greater chance they can get stuck between your pelvic bones and that can cause alot of problems and worse.
