Here's how it works. The water vapor in the air changes--it stops staying a gas. As the pressure of the air it's mixed with goes down, the energy of the water vapor gets spread out. It cools off and changes from a vapor to a liquid--raindrops. We get rain, snow, sleet, and hail.
Perhaps country animals aren't distracted by human activities like school, baseball, and visiting Web sites, so they see the sky. Be an animal, and take time to notice the weather. It's beautiful.

Animals have a heigtened awareness to a lot of things besides storms. But specifically with storms due to their primal instincts that allow them to be intune via of intense hearing, they can hear thunder from many more miles away then us. For example, when the devestating Sunami hit last year or so, only domestic animals were killed. Animals senses are very keen; alerting them to danger. The un-domesticated animals went to high ground before the Sunami hit.

It is thought that animals are more sensitive to the changes in barametric pressure than us humans. This is kinda like how my surgery scars from my collapsed lung from 20yrs ago starts to hurt every time there is a big change in pressure or temp.
This is also thought to be true for animals in earthquake regions that respond to the earliest tremors that are unfelt by humans but indicate a potential problem.
If you think about it in terms of evolution, the animals that 'learned' how to sense these changes were the ones that survived the storms and such thus passing on their 'sensetive' genes to their offspring.
Hope this answers the question.

The nature of the atmosphere changes slightly. You might be able to notice the same thing; the air gets clearer and you will find that sound travels more. That's the earth getting ready for the storm. Animals are very attune and sensitive to such changes in their surroundings.

Animals have different types of senses than we do. They sense things when we can't. for example: horses and dogs can since when a bad strom is coming because they get really anxious and start pacing around in need to go outside.{for dogs<} Horse also start pacing but they whinny in order to get the owners attention that something isn't right. Also the air is something else. hope this helped.
