In cold weather, it should warm up a little. The cold oil and fuel needs to circulate throughout the engine. In warmer climates like Australia, its not as important.

I asked my mechanic this same question, and this is what he told me: Today's cars don't need to be warmed up.
We aren't doing any damage to our cars by just getting in them and driving away -- especially if you don't experience very extreme weather.

Yes. You should give it a rub down with a warm towel, especially the bonnet, and the tail. That is the best way to warm up before driving off in the mornings. I come from Scotland, I should know!

You don't have to warm up your car as long as you take it easy until the engine warms up eg... driving more slowly, not doing any fast takeoffs, etc... I have heard that you can actually harm newer vehicles of you let them warm up too long, not to mention being bad for the environment and gas mileage.

No, it doesn't hurt your car. Just let it run 10-30 seconds and go. The warm up is for old carbureted cars.

If it gets below 50F (don't know what that is in Celsius) you should at least let your car sit for 1 - 2 minutes before driving off in it just so the cold thick fluids can circulate a little - other than that you can basically just take off

The worst thing you can do to a modern engine is let it idle too long. There is no load on the engine so it is producing little heat.
The best thing to do is let it idle for a few seconds, then drive slowly (under 40) for the first couple of miles.

If your car has hydraulic lifters a short warm up is good.
It is only to make sure the lifters are pumped up to proper height, other than that just make sure oil pressure is up.
Don't rev the engine....just let it run normal.

Would you be ready to go if you were woken up in the middle of the night? no, you'd need a few minutes to warm up yourself. Same principle
