A good start would be to learn your tables and spend less time on the computer. Trust me, I'm good at 'mental math', I knew my tables at a very early age and we didn't have home computers then.

Usually by rounding numbers and doing the operations... well, in your head.
48 + 31, for a simple example.
50 + 30 = 80.
If an exact answer is needed you could take the numbers that got rounded out and add them. 89.
Although I'd imagine that this is needed for harder functions.

You imagine a white board or a piece of paper and ur writing the problem in your imagination. For some people its easier to just write it down.
