Which would be more expensive: maintaining and driving a car, or maintaining and driving a horse and cart?

I'm talking a bog-standard runaround versus bog-standard horse and cart. I'm thinking that if we all went back to the good old horse and cart method then it would be extremely environmentally friendly. And we'd all have fabulous rose bushes :-)

I would say the horse would cost a lot more than you think because of vet bills and the amount of hours spent looking after it you could have spent at work.
I think the ultimate way of travel is by camels as they are far more kickass than a horse and need a lot less looking after. Also a camel can spit at people who annoy you!
A two camal chariot is the way I hope to roam the streets of Leeds in 2007!

I agree with you,but a car today would be cheaper than keeping a Horse and cart. If I had a place,I would have a Horse....but I don't.
Another problem is I drive 20 miles one way to work and that would be hard on the horse.

I'd say theres not much in it, when you count the insurance, road tax, petrol, servicing, MOT and the original cost of the car. And yes its much more envoronmentally friendly. But what about putting a little wind turbine in the field that a horse would need (or you could have both in the same field. Then you could charge up your electric car, cook, watch the X-Factor etc ...much more versatile.

THere is not enough pasture land for people to use horses instead of cars. you can park your car in a one care garage but a horse must have 1 achre of land . this doesnt count the vet bills every year the hay and grain the fee charged to shoe them. We have 2 very healthy very contented horses we are fortunate that we have a wonderful friend who lets use use her land but befor we paid 60 dollars a month per horse to board them then we had hay bills graine bills and vet bills. you can figure that it cost about 150 per month per horse.

Probably the car, and the horse and buggy will never get you to a daily round trip of 100 miles.

I would have to say a horse. cause it has to be fed EVERY day at least twice a day.
