I went all natural with my first son. It only became unbearably painful after they had to give me Pitocin to make me dilate more. I was dilated to 7 when they gave me the meds. I was very proud that I did it all natural though.
With my daughter I got an epidural because the pain was unbearable and I was only dilated to 4. I literally felt like I was dying. I didn't even feel the needle because I was in so much other pain.
With my 3rd child (a boy) I got an epidural at 5 cm and I felt the needle. It stung for a minute and that was about it.

Well hun, I won't lie to you, child birth hurts. A lot. I don't want to scare you or anything but its pain that no one else who doesn't have children can understand. I went through over 18 hours of labor an my epidural only lasted for 2 hours (long story but they didn't believe me when I said it wasn't working anymore) But don't be afraid. I too hated needles when I got pregnant. But pregnancy changes a person. I no longer fear needles. The epidural it self is godlike. For the short time I had it it was wonderful. And no it did not hurt. I was in so much pain with the labor I honestly didn't even feel it. I didn't feel the needle, plus they numb the area with a tiny nedle that goes just under the skin a bit.I thought about it a lot before hand. I hated needles and thought "there is no way I'm getting a needle in my spine" but once I was in excruciating pain I decided the epidural would be great. I didn't care if they put it in my neck I just wanted relief. SO to answer your question : No it doesn't hurt, you will be glad once you get it if you decide to. But every labor is different. A friend of mine had an easy labor. While another firend had a horrible one. Don't be scared. And as far as the effects on the baby, It's fine. They wouldn't offer it unless it was safe. My child is perfect and shes almost 5. I hope this helped. But don't let the doctors or nursed try to tell you what to do. You do what is comfotable to you. It is your birthing expereince, you make the call. Let them handle the medical safty, you handle your comfort. Good luck!

As a mom of 3 completely health kids I can tell you that the epidural wont have lifelong effects on the baby. The needle isn't too bad. It is the popping sound when they get it in place that scares you. They give you some numbing medication before they put it in. I also had the fun experience of having an epidural not work .. TWICE! I can honestly tell you that having the epidural and the after effects of numbness were worse than having the baby and feeling it all. As soon as the baby is out the pain stops. And once you get so far you are so involved with pushing and everything that you don't notice the pain. Only the pressure. Good luck. Maybe a shot of some meds in your IV??

I couldn't even feel the needle go in. I was in so much pain I could really care less about the epidural needle. My recovery was fine and my son is healthy.
If you want to go the natural route my cousin did it. She's just fine today and said it only hurts for the time being. She wasn't happy about having to go natural but everything turned out okay. She's always told me it does not make you any more of a woman to have a natural birth--the baby will come either way. I believe that. I think regardless if you have an epidural or not it really does not make a difference--except without the epidural it hurts more.

I was the same way about the the epidural needle...scared of it. But once you are in the hospital feeling the contractions your not going to care...I don't remember the the needle hurting because they insert it during a contraction. I was in labor for 13 hours. Thank goodness for the epidural.
I had a healthy girl. No side effects. Good luck!

The needle doesn't feel good, but it's not a big deal. An epidural won't hurt you or your baby - that's one reason it's used for women in labor. Natural childbirth is unquestionably painful; I believe that going the epidural route allows you to concentrate on using your strength for pushing, rather than fighting and being distracted by pain. Either way, the odds of a successful delivery and a healthy baby are VASTLY in your favor - congratulations!

I just birthed my baby boy at home a week and a half ago (no meds, of course) after 24 hours of labor. My first birth was a C-Sec. Going natural is much easier at home with no one to break your concentration. The thing I found helped me the most was to remember that my body was created to do this. No, it doesn't feel good, but the pain is not like stubbing your toe...you do get a break between each contraction. If you are calm and stay in control, you will be pushing before you know it - time melts away and means nothing while concentrating in labor. Here's a great site for more questions (or answers)... www.mothering.com , click on discuss for the forum.

Well the epidural doesn't hurt and had no effect on me or my son. They due a numbing agent on your back prior and it is like when you have a shot... you barely feel the prick of the numbing agent and when they did the epidural i just felt pressure not pain... ofcourse my second child, the epidural didn't work both times so that was kind of natural... i cried the whole time... but in the end it is always worth it no matter what you did

To get a cesarean for any beauty reason is only a dangerous inspiration. They must be on a NEED groundwork ONLY, when you consider that they positioned your spouse AND your child at a miles larger chance. I'm no longer certain how getting a c-segment grew to become one of these large fashion over normal delivery, nevertheless it demands to give up. The muscle mass in her vagina might not be precisely the equal after giving delivery relying on a couple of matters. First, oftentimes for the period of childbirth muscle mass are evidently ripped; different instances for the period of childbirth the health practitioner will honestly take scissor and make an incision from the backside of her vaginal establishing so far as virtually to her anus if there's a challenge getting the child via. However, those matters will heal, and with Kegal sporting events, your spouse's vagina will probably be as tight as earlier than, nevertheless it most likely would take a at the same time.
