The network you subscribe to, whether this be a post-paid plan. or a prepaid plan will issue you a sim card which you insert into your phone, usually at the back behind the battery pack. Depending on whether this is a postpaid sim or a prepaid sim, cost will vary. A prepaid sim, where in you purchase prepaid cards and Punch in the designated call card number and pin to give you a months worth of call and text time, will usually cost you somewhere between $10 - $20. A postpaid plan, however, doesn't require you to buy a prepaid card. The network allots you the call time and number of texts available corresponding to the plan you subscribed to. You simply pay by the end of the month, any calls and texts in excess of the allotted will be charged accordingly.
This sim will serve as your means utilize the network's services. Receiving and outgoing texts and calls. GPRS and WAP services, G3 and Internet, you name it, any services your network offers are coursed through this sim card. It also serves as your identity with the network. Without a sim card, your phone is almost useless apart from basic non-network related functions like file management, mp3s, or picture taking. Storing of phone numbers can be in either phone or sim cards now a days.

Subscriber Identity Module card. This removable card is the chip inside a GSM phone with information such as the user’s phone number, phone book as well as other information related to the subscriber.
Nextel has them. I don't know how much they cost.

Get a SIM card from where you got your phone. They should already giveu it to you. Anyway, I don't think it's too expensive. A SIM card is what holds all of your info on the phone(settings, and most importantly phone numbers)

I don't know if you could buy a sim card seperately. It usually comes with the plan (verizon, cingular, t-mobile) when you get a cell phone.
