Why not? Certain words or phrases can remind a person of an event that has happened or is happening to them, causing particular emotions to rise to the surface. The actual music (minus lyrics) will also influence your mood depending upon several things. For instance, the rhythm can affect your mood as can the tone and all other aspects of the song. Would you listen to Tindersticks if you were working out? Probably not because it's not that upbeat. Would you listen to Trout Fishing if you were in a bad mood? Probably not, because it's too kooky. Maybe if you wanted to drown in your own self pity, you would listen to something said, like Yesterday or something. Get the idea?

I've never known a song put me in a particular mood or state of mind. However I do find that if I am in a particular mood or have a thought that's bugging me... then certain songs can reflect and relate what is going on in my head...but it can't make me change my mind.
Eg..right now i'm missing somebody I like but never asked out...I'm always reminded by a song called 'Samba Love' by a guy called Kaskade... just because of the opening line ("never took the chance to say I love you, and it's the one thing I regret). It doesn't change my mood, it's just very, very relevant at this moment in time.
sorry to waffle..but you get the idea.

They sure do! I heard There is a light that never goes out by the Smiths on the radio the other day. That always reminds me of starting college, leaves blowing in a freezing wind and a girl that broke my heart. That's well over 10 years ago now, but when the bassline kicked in it still gave me goosebumps. The amazing thing is, i haven't thought of that in ages! Yet the emotions were all there in crystal clarity! Cracker of a good song tho!

I think in my case songs reflect my emotions rather than affect them. My state of mind, how life is at that time, a memory that wells up in my head , all these seem to cause me to listen to certain songs or types of music.

Yes. Song affects emotion. Some songs affect your emotions because they are meaningful and if you think/ look at the lyrics the are powerful. So SOME songs do affect your emotions.

Yes, absolutely. Some of the best songs can make me laugh or cry. Film composers like John Williams can turn what otherwise might have been a bland scene into one that tugs at your heartstrings and brings tears to your eyes.

Yes they really affect me because for every song there is a moment in time that you can't recapture. Listening to the song is the closest that you may get to this.

Of course, I have several songs that remind me of times good and bad:
Papa Roach; Scars: This reminds me of a past love
Metallica; Whiskey in the Jar: reminds me of my first detatchment to Canada
Electric 6; gay bar: It was played in every bar and nightclub in Newquay when I was there (In the charts at that moment)
GnR; November Rain: Reminds me of an ex
ZZ Topp; Viva Las Vegas and tony Christie; way to amarillo: Both remind me of a detatchment to Las Vegas, (second one was in the charts at the time.
