In Frederick Douglass' first escape attempt he conspired with six individuals to bring his escape about. What happened was that one of the six enslaved co-conspirators betrayed Douglass and the other five enslaved Africans. Douglass was thrown in jail for a short time - but his new slave holder was a tolerant fellow and instead of selling him "down South" to Mississippi or whatever. He took Douglass out of jail and gave him another chance. A chance that Douglass did take again and the second time he did escape.
