Socrates became the model of the philosopher, and also a martyr for it when Athens put him to death for his questioning.
Because they actually wrote their thoughts down, Plato and Aristotle produced the first two complete systems of philosophy, touching on just about every field (ethics, politics, aesthetics, metaphysics, etc.). Many say that all subsequent western philosophy is a footnote to Plato.

Plato lays the ground for the entire Western philosophy system, he was Aristotle's teacher, so arguably, without Plato, there wouldn't be an Aristotle. Aristotle developed a system that disagreed with Plato's and from both these systems stemmed different philosophies afterwards. Both Plato and Aristotle influenced modern Christianity, especially Catholicism. Neo-Platonic thought was the foundation for St. Augustine as well as St. Justin the Martyr's philosophy, the first being one of the most influential Doctors of the Church. Artistotilian thought, is the foundation of a lot of current Christian philosophy, and was used by St. Thomas Aquinas in the 15th century.. In both cases, those philosophies helped push European thought into a period of relative philosophical stability until the 16th century. Plato and Aristotle lay the foundations of what it means to be a Philosopher, and for the logic of the Greeks that is instilled in us, even as we don't know it. It seems that without knowing other philosophies, we adhere to a lot of these already, because the modern world is based on them.

Well, today our entire higher education format is based on the Socratic method. Basically you are free to question, and the knowing one will answer, and yet you are still free to question. When you're at a university, you're all about the Socratic method.
