Would it be a reasonable request to turn it down and turn on the closed captioning if it was WAY too loud for someone?

I must be deaf, because I usually have it around 75% unless it's on one of those "loud" channels. I almost always turn on the closed captions when I watch a movie, because I don't want to miss a thing.

Ours is about the same level. I don't hear as well as my co-habitant.

There is a better solution than closed caption. That will distract the person with good hearing, and the poor hearer will get tired of reading and not seeing the action.

For anywhere from $50 to $100 you can buy a good set of wireless remote earphones. You plug them into your stereo that is at the same frequency as the TV. One frequency works for anything coming through your television, even video tapes. It is wonderful to watch TV with and the one who hears better is not blasted.

Maybe 10%. I don't need it to loud to hear the TV. It's about ten feet away and it hurts my ears if it gets to loud. In fact sometimes when a commercial comes on I have to turn it down until it's done. I wish they'd have the levels the same on recordings.
