A podcast is a multimedia file distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers. The term, as originally coined by Ben Hammersley in an article in the Guardian February 12, 2004 [1], was meant as a portmanteau of "broadcasting" and "iPod".[2] Like 'radio', it can mean both the content and the method of delivery; the latter may also be termed podcasting. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster.

Though podcasters' web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is distinguished from other digital audio formats by its ability to be downloaded automatically using software capable of reading feed formats such as RSS or Atom.

Think how a desktop aggregator works. You subscribe to a set of feeds, and then can easily view the new stuff from all of the feeds together, or each feed separately.

Podcasting works the same way, with one exception. Instead of reading the new content on a computer screen, you listen to the new content on an iPod or iPod-like device.

Think of your iPod as having a set of subscriptions that are checked regularly for updates. Today there are a limited number of programs available this way. The format used is RSS 2.0 with enclosures.

In the future, radio shows like All Things Considered and Rush Limbaugh will be available in this manner, and perhaps other syndication formats will support enclosures.

The best thing since sliced bread (Well maybe not THE best but yea)

If you have iTunes on your computer you can click on podcasts which will use the internet to take you to the homepage where you have different podcasts to choose from (I would reccomend Russell Brand's podcast - its a eekly round-up of his shows)

Podcasts can be audio or visual depending on which you choose, but all are free, its like a database where you can listen to comedy shows, or have Spanish lessons!!

Once a podcast is downloaded, it is then added to your music collection and if you do have an iPod it will be added onto there as well, so its a great idea if you have to travel to work by train etc as you can just listen to that on your way to work, i.e. learn another language (Although you may get a few dodgy looks if your repeating after the audio)

So the podcasts are updated when a new one is released you have to 'subscribe to the podcast' meaning that when you open up iTunes and new podcasts are available they just download and update. However, the upto three of the podcasts from a show can only be kept at once i.e. Russell Brand updates weekly and you can only have 3 at a time on your music, the old ones will be replaced.

Hope this helps and good luck!!

Podcast is another opportunity that the web offers people to demonstrate their creativity. Without much investment, it is possible to produce and upload an audio file to the web.

Whether or not your audio file (podcast) is downloaded depends on the same things that affect whether or not your blog is widely read; people have to be able to find out about it.

And one of the ways in which your pocast can get publicity is by being VERY GOOD as iTunes allows people to rate podcasts; the podcasts that people rate highly go to the top of the list, encouraging more people to try them out.

The weekly UK Radio 4 programme http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/saturdaylive/ can give your podcast a publicity boost - if yours is chosen to be their Podcast of the Week.

Podcasts are like radio, yet on the pc ... some have music, some have voice, and a few have the two, in basic terms comparable to radio. The neat element a pair of podcast is which you would be able to acquire it once you % it, and can hear to it once you % it ... maximum are 'up' for from 2 weeks to a month until now they're 'replaced' ... and maximum 'podcasts' are finished so there's a sturdy 'overlap' time, so in case you permit out one while it first comes out, you will get it and hear it later ...

Podcasting is a method of publishing audio broadcasts through the internet allowing other people to download them. It became popular in late 2004, largely due to automatic downloading of audio onto portable players or personal computer. Podcasting enables people to create their own radio show or music which other people can download and listen to them. Listeners may subscribe to feeds using Podcatching software which checks for and downloads new content automatically. Some podcatching software is also able to copy podcasts to portable music players e.g. iPod. Any digetal audio player or computer with audio playing software can play podcasts. By the end of 2005 some aggregators could be able to videos as well audio; this is because of new personal devices such as Sony PSP which can play video but podcast will probably still be mainly audio. Podcating is likely to continue to evolve.

It's a file (usually MP3 or MPEG-4 Movie) that you can download and/or subscribe to updates of. The most popular is probably iTunes, but there are many others that offer this feature.

You can search for a "PodCast" and download or subscribe to it. Then you can listen to it whenever or do whatever you want with it - it's all free. You can now even subscribe to or download Video PodCasts - and it's again, the same principle!

It's like a radio show that can be downloaded to you MP3 any time. Can come in the form of blogs, information and entertainment.

IMO, Radio Redux by ArchangelUK does all 3 (Only if you like Sonic the Hedgehog, though!)

You get an MP3 player and talk in to it and it records an MP3 that you can put on a website for people to download or attach to an email or whatever. You could even add music and do your own recording of a sort of radio show.
