Showering after using a tanning bed or laying in the sun will not have any effect on your tan, because the damage has been done. You shouldn't be tanning, period. Skin cancer aside, you'll age prematurely with wrinkles and "liver spots", which are really "sun damage spots". So if you care about your looks, don't tan.... use a sunless tanner.

I have been tanning for years, and I have heard if you are using a bronzing tanning lotion which is very popular right now you should not shower for a couple of hours to let the lotion soak into your skin. I have heard people say they shower right after tanning and still had a golden tan. I personally wait a couple hours before showering.

For about an hour at least...think about it. You've just "dyed" the color of your outer most skin cells, do you want to wash all that off?
