The perimeter of a rectangle is the sum of all 4 sides, i.e. twice the width plus twice the length.
P = 2W + 2L
120 = 2W + 2(40), from substituting what we know
120 = 2W + 80
120 - 80 = 2W + 80 - 80
40 = 2W
40 / 2 = 2W / 2
20 = W
The table is 20 inches wide.

Perimeter = 2 x length + 2 x the width
120 = 2 (40) + 2 (w)
120 = 80 +2w
40 = 2 w
20 = w
So the table is 20 inches wide
