the absolute BEST MMORPG i know is Runescape! i tried it out for the first time a couple years ago and ive been hooked ever since. there are neverending things to see and do, there are new updates every week, its just an overall great game.you can play for free, but if you get membership(which unlocks a load of new stuff) it's only 5 bucks a month. not bad i say if you can afford a home computer and a monthly internet connection.i know you specifically said FREE games, but i had to mention that because ive been a member for almost a year and a half and its been the best ever. don't believe me? check it out for yourself. runescape.com.

I play a Private run shard for Ultima Online. http://www.game-master.net/ If your into fantasy settings, best MMO I have played. Graphics are about 10 years out of date, but the game mechanics, people in the game, and fun factor far outweigh the graphics. Plus, it works on older computers! It is a free shard, with the option of making donations to the shard to help in it's monthly maintenance.
For FPS, I play Battlefield 2142. Sadly, you would need to purchase the game or download it from a friend to play. Though there is no monthly fee for the online portion of the game. http://www.ea.com if you want to check it out.

My favorite MMO is the game Guild Wars but, you have to go to your local game store or Wal-Mart and buy the game but with a cost of about 50 USD the online play is free and there are thousands of players and loads of gametime on it....however if you are look for a MMO that you do not have to buy i would recommend discworld which is a MUD (multi-user demsion) and is text-based it does however take a bit of gitting used to (sense it isnt graphical) but i love it and would recommend it to everyone

I know LOADS of them. Oz, IMVU, Maid Marian. I'd list all of the games I know but you'd be sitting here for hours reading them. I don't think you'd want to waste your time reading when you could be playing a good game, would you?
