I'll compare breathing to the wind. You can't see the wind either. But when the wind blows you can see the leaves move in the trees and when you breathe you can see your chest move also!

Good point, but the answer would be that they can see the effect of their breathing - their chest moving up and down. People tend to question what they cannot see or understand.
