Don't spend money when you can use state of the art technology that is far superior then any of the purchase software. Here are three that I use in my computers.

Please know that you can only use one antivirus program. Or you will have serious conflict with your system. You can use two or three antispyware programs without conflict.

Here are three free program that I have in my computer and they all are compatible and cause no conflict.

Antivirus: http://www.avast.com This is excellent state of the art technology. Has a real time scanner running in the background that really detects and destroys viruses found in a webpage or file in realtime. You will also get updates two or three times per day. Plus you get a pop up from your tray that will advise you that virus updates have been installed. Or a virus has been found and destroyed. If you have your spearks on a male voice will come on an inform you about the updates or a virus found.

They will ask you for your email address so they can send you their free home for use personal version. The key is good for one year. After one year you must request a new key. Their corporate version is 100% the same, they just make corporate pay. (Company out of Prague).

htttp://www.emsisoft.com Excellent state of the art spyware program that gives you protection from, spyware, malware, trojans, rogue dialers, etc. etc. Just download thier free version A2-Squared V.2 Likewise they will ask you for your email address so they can send you your free key. This program has an excellent background scanner that comes with the paid version. The free version will fill all of your needs. Scans all 195,000 objects in my system. (Company out of Austria).

http://www.ewido.net (This was a German software company purchase this year by "AVG", out of Prague). Use the http that I gave you. This program is very much like the A2Squared free.
In my personal opinion it is faster and finds more spyware. This program becomes free, if you don't purchase after thirty days. They will only remove the background guard. (The A2Squared free as a better background guard). And your updates will have to be done on a manual basis.

I have used all thre and never had one virus in my systems in over nine years.

You will find that the purchased programs don't come anywhere near the technology found in the above free versions.

Stay away from Nortons, Mcafee, as they are pure garbage and resource hogs. Also for spyware, stay away from superantispyware. They really have an excellent antispyware program that detects what other may miss. This is a free program. The problem is two of the above programs found adware embedded in superantispyware.

For zero day attacks, download this free program http://www.cyberhawk.com (Protects you against attacks that can come before any security company is aware of new viruses or trojans and spyware.

Rootkit detector is built into the A2Squared.

For spyware there is no one product that will fix all. There are a lot of free ones. Spybot, HiJackTHIS, CWSredder, to name a few. One that I bought and love is Pest Patrol. They have now been bought out so not sure if its been changed or not.
For Virus I have only used McAfee, and ETrust. I have had some run ins with Norton its good but I feel it can be a system hog. What ever you do just be sure to keep a virus program on your PC at all times & keep the data files updated.

For your anti-spyware needs:
Here you are:

Pick and choose at least 2 from the list below. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.

Spybot Search and Destroy:

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html

Ewido:

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Adaware SE:

A-Squared:

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

Windows Defender (Beta 2):

Unfortunately, many "paid for" anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

And to protect your computer from ever getting infected with spyware in the first place, you can use these 2 freebies:

SpywareBlaster:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

SiteAdvisor:

http://www.siteadvisor.com/

................................

For your anti-virus needs:

Here is a list of all the major free anti-virus programs:

Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Anti-Vir:
http://www.free-av.com/

AOL AntiVirusShield:
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?

AVG:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5

BitDefender 8: (on-demand only, no real-time protection)
http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-8-Free-Edition.html

Clamwin: (on-demand only, no real-time protection)
http://www.clamwin.com/

All are fairly mediocue compared to some of the top rated (paid) anti-virus programs such as Kaspersky (KAV) or Eset NOD-32. But you can't beat the price.

Spybot S&D - http://www.safer-networking.org/
