One of the best things you can do is to read The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. Have your s/o read it with you or as soon as you finish it. That book should be required reading for anyone thinking about getting married and should be reread at regular intervals or before filing for separation or divorce.
The man I am currently dating gave me a copy during the first couple of months - once he realized how much he really liked me. It pretty much outlined every mistake my ex and I had made and what could have been done differently. I will be forever grateful for having read it - it can be applied to most relationships (friends, family, coworkers, etc.).
If I had things to do all over again that would be one of the primary differences. The second is I would have been more insistent that regular 'tune-ups' with a counselor be done.

My b/f & lover of 3 years won't hold or kiss me. The love making is wonderful but I wish he was a little more tender in between.

He's already doing everything I wish for... Mostly, it is evident that he loves to spend time with me and enjoys my company, and this is how I know he loves me.
