I do agree with the inbreeding theory because up until recently, they did. princes married princesses/ ladies et al. Beauty was not really the tie-breaker it was more for the benefit and prestige. The only beautiful thing that happened to the royal family was Princess Diana but we all know the story- and look what Prince Charles replaced her with- some old lady uglier than his already unbelievable ugly mom (the queen)- So my conclusion is that inbreeding, bad taste in women, maybe due to some eye defect we don't know about, and like someone rightly said, the royals don't believe in hapiness and smiles...I think Princess Diana' kids (Harry and Williams) will turn out different and not quite as ugly, since they are "mutts" i.e. a breed from ugly dad and pretty mom.

I'm not sure where or if the trees cross, but there was a King of Spain who was literally a drooling idiot. Seven of his eight grandparents were children of the same person, a queen who was charmingly nicknamed Joanna the Mad, because she went stark, raving, insane after her husband died. I can't remember his name off the top of my head (and no luck with Google, either) but his nickname was "The Enchanted". If you happen to have a copy of Michael Farquhar's book, A Treasury of Royal Scandals, lying around, the story's in there somewhere.

I don't who the ancestor was, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I believe that I will find Prince William hot, always.

:) I've been wondering that too. But then again I think they won't look so miserable if they smile a lot and live freer. They always appear classic and formal, while Monaco royalties don't and they look just so pretty and happy. Maybe Monaco royal family doesn't have to bear too much pressure.

It is not because of one ancestor. It is because the royal families will only breed with other royalty therefore engaging in a lot of inbreeding. They look that way because of that.

Keep it the family over a few generations and the gene pool (including looks) goes down the toilet. It's also why most of them are as thick as horse sh1t.

You have a really good point here. I never thought of it this way. It made me giggle to realize how true it is.

I agree with the previous posters about it being inbreeding.

This goes all the way back to the 18th century when the germans seized control of the monarchy.
