An open-faced sandwich is exactly like a normal one, except without the bread on top, thus the face is open. They invented it during WWII when they had food shortages, as it would make a loaf of bread last twice as long.

Hi! It means that the sandwich is served open with the middle showing on both sides of the bread. It's like the sandwich is one step short of being made. It has not been closed yet.

Open faced sandwiches are usually very yummy! I hope this helps.

An open faced sandwich has the bread only on the bottom. Grilled cheese and tuna is a typical open faced sandwich.

Usually open face means it's too big and gooey and messy to close and pick up with your hands. It's more of a knife and fork sandwich.

I believe it's "open" because it's not closed, and "face" up.

Instead of closing, or putting the top bread on the sandwich, you leave it open.

Being from new mexico, i see open face burgers all the time! usually because we like to put chilli on our burgers, and it gets pretty messy. theyre basically burgers that the top is to the side. If you wanna see a real open face burger, come out to the southwest and order a chile burger!

Others have answered the question well here. But they all beg the question, how in the world did they come up with the description ''open face''?

One piece of bread with the meat or what ever on top. Usually there is cheese melted over the toppings (like a tuna-melt).
