the book i like seem to have a lot of detail, back story, and is rooted in history... i love the details in Brown and Rice books. Plus they always throw in a sex and sexualy tentsion.

Anne Rice does have some other wonderful books, if you like things in that vein. She ties the Vampire Chronicles to the Mayfair Witches in Blackwood Farm and Blood Canticle (and another I haven't read). The Harry Potters are also highly addicitve, especially the deeper you get into the series. By the fourth book I really think they cease to be childrens stories because they are very detailed and engrossing.

If you like vampire books, I have heard wonderful things about the Anita Blake series from Laurell K. Hamilton. I am currently reading her Meredith Gentry series, which is on faeries, and while it is not the best literature I have ever read, I am addicted to the plot and characters.
The first Anita Blake book is Guilty Pleasures, while the Meredith Gentry series starts with A Kiss of Shadows.
Not sure they go along with Dan Browns books or not, never read them.

two good books to read are Twilight and New Moon written by Stephenie Meyer. It is a story about a girl who falls in love with a vampire. Very, very, very good books. Here is what the summery of Twilight
Isabella Swan's move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear. The lovers find themselves balanced precariously on the point of a knife -- between desire and danger.
For New Moon
For Bella Swan, there is one thing more important than life itself: Edward Cullen. But being in love with a vampire is even more dangerous than Bella could ever have imagined. Edward has already rescued Bella from the clutches of one evil vampire, but now, as their daring relationship threatens all that is near and dear to them, they realize their troubles may be just beginning...

Perhaps try the following:
Libra by Don Dellilo
London Fields by Martin Amis
Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy
Where I'm Calling From by Raymond Carver
Rock Springs by Richard Ford
No vampires, but you have an outside chance at learning more about great American fiction and perhaps expanding your mix of genres.

The Locket by Evans
A Dog's Life by Peter Mayle
The Hobbit by Tolkien
The Chronicles of Narnia by Lewis
The Unexpected Mrs. Polifax by Gilman
They may just put a smile on your face. :)
