This may seem like an odd question but i feel this is important to know. Should you clean it with water? What if you have some discharge to get rid of?

Do not douche! Even though a lot of people on here say to do it! If you douche, you are washing all the good bacteria out with the bad and causing it to be suseptible to infections.

Here are some ideas:
1. Talk to a girlfriend/mom/sister, etc. about it.
2. If you are having unusual discharge, odor, etc. then see a doctor or gynocologist. You may have an infection and need a cream to clear it up. If not, then just see your doc for your yearly exam as regular. Remember that eating lots of yogurt and reducing your sugar intake will really help your good bacteria down there.
3. Use thin maxi pads that stick to your underwear (scented or non scented) if you like for any discharge issues. Change it once or twice a day.
4. Do not douche! Just don't do it. If you are really addicted to being clean, get a water bottle, the kind they give out in a hostpital (squirt bottle) and just squirt the water there after you go to the bathroom. If you need a clean-up during the day. My friend suggests that you get a wet washcloth (no soap) and just "wipe" down there and then dry throughly. If you do not dry after showers, etc. then the dampness can cause your bacterial/yeast problems in the future.
5. Don't use fragrance down there like tissue paper, etc.
6. You can cover up smells with feminine sprays (spray your thigh area), or powders (stay away from talc, it can cause cervical cancer). Try Talc-free powders.
7. In the shower use your hand to clean down there. You can use a removable shower head and or/a washcloth and just water! Baths you can do the same thing.
8. IT is self-cleaning so no need to go overboard! Remember not to wipe from back to front but front to back when going to the bathroom so that you do not introduce bacterias.

Good luck!

The vagina is a naturally self-cleansing body part, so douching isn't necessary to keep the vagina clean. Some women chose to use a vinegar and water douche after the end of their period, but this is not necessary. Women who like to douche, however, should do so with products that are unscented. It is not normal to have a vagina that smells like a field of flowers and can you imagine the chemicals used to create that "fragrance"... not good for you at all. If you have a 'strange' odor from you vagina, see a gynecologist!

Wash your vagina when you shower or bath with a gentle soap or cleansing bar. Don't over-do-it or you can irritate the sensitive lining and it is not a pleasant feeling, but it will heal. I’m sure you’ve seen many TV ads for products that claim to care for your vagina, most are not necessary, unless you have a vaginal infection.

I just wanted to see the answers, but since noone of those ignorant, narrow-minded answers you got is appropriate for your question, I decided to write something.
I personally wash it with water only, I`ve heard that it`s not recommended to use soap inside the vagina, not quite sure why.
But yeas, there are feminine soaps, specially for vaginas. Also I know that it`s good and helthy to make a regular clean on the vagina once a month or two, but not quite sure with what exactly.
About this you can inquire with your geneacolosist.
A good question, pitty people are so tabooded about everyday physiological issues.

And when I posted my post I saw more answers had came, so I`ll make just a bit of correction - when addressing the quality of all the answers, update it to "the majority of answers/peope"

Your vagina is actually the area inside your body. To clean the outer portion, (the vulva) use a soapy wash cloth and swipe down one side of the labia, change to a clean spot on the cloth, swipe the other side, find a clean spot, and then swipe down the middle. Soap is essential for cleanliness in that area, but don't use a highly scented soap if you're sensitive. Use something mild like Dove. Also, never use vaginal douches. They force bacteria from outside the body, inside the body and can cause infection in your vagina and cervix. If you have a foul odor, see your gyno. A slight odor is normal but anything abnormal for your body (and only you know) could be a sign of infection.

Unperfumed soap like Ivory or even a perfumed soap like Dove should clean it out nice and good. Or if you are looking for some hard core cleaning then I blieve there is a such thing called a Douche, but I'm not sure. You should look up Douche in Wikipedia.

Soap (non perfumed) and water is the safest way. Do not douche! Douching can actually be harmful as it gets rid of the good bacteria we need in our vagina to keep it regulated. I actually use Norforms suppositories after menses. They give effective, refreshing deodorant protection that lasts for hours. They are actually safe to use daily if needed. They make scented as well as unscented if you are sensitive. Norforms can be purchased at the local drug store in the hygiene section.

Never douche, it unbalances your bacteria-fighting products of your vagina, and can make your period irregular. A good sit-in bath is always good. Some vaginal washes are good too, to freshen up.
