It's okay; I'm not offended.
But to answer your question, I don't believe that Americans are better than Europeans. I also don't believe that Europeans are better than Americans. We're all people, but we happened to be born on different sides of the Atlantic. I know there are more than few Americans that will disagree with me and it's those that create the "arrogant American" stereotype.
I suppose those that feel superior due to childhood indoctrination. I used to think that Americans were better than everyone else. It's what I was taught as a child and as a child, I did not think to question. But as I got older, I began to question and do research and I learned that the early indoctrination was wrong. Most people don't want to come out of their little safety zone.
I don't know if any one person is guilty for this attitude or not. I think it's a society problem. The more people learn the truth and talk with others, the more people will learn that underneath all the differences, we're really all the same.
You're right...someone who thinks that Spain belongs to Mexico is worrying. In fact, it's scary and embarrassing.

Now I have a question. Yes I am an American, but I don't agree w/ President Bush or the war or a majority of his ideas and plans along with almost half of this country. Why do other countries think that just because I am an American that I believe and support everything this government is doing?
America is a great country, unfortunatly it has its flaws just like any other place in the world
PS I love Oprah I think she is great.

I don't think I'm superior to Europeans, and I can't speak for those who do.
Actually, what I really dislike is the assumption on the part of some non-Americans that all Americans are abrasive, arrogant jerks. We're not. And we don't all have a superiority complex, either.

Your question shows Americans that other people in other countries have a view of them that Americans will not like.
So they mostly will insult you, instead of becoming thoughtful about what they do that might cause such negative impressions.
Of course, Chauvinism is not just a French thing, it is everywhere.

Of course Americans think we're better. Never mind that we haven't strayed far from home or think Mickey D's is a gourmet meal. We are Americans and we are right!
Hey...we used to be good guys.
