Make up and photo touch ups. You'll even see some have longer necks in the magazines than they really have in real life. Just another ploy to sell to women that they should look like something that they do not even look like with out a photo touch up.

what everyone said is right i agree it's cuz of
-airbrush
-alot of people like to look better for special occasions..celebrities go all out for that
-they have loads of people to do their makeup, clothes, nails...whatever
personally i think some look better in real life..esp. the guys can be hotter in person, i look at the photo from the moment i met a male celeb..then i look at his poster.i think he looked way hotter in person...id rather go for the natural look.(but that doesn't mean the ones in magazines arent good theyre just not as good) plus no one likes to see guys get made up anyway really.

There's a lot of reasons. One is that they have clothing stylists, hair stylists and hours of makeup to do a photo for a magazine. After the photo is taken graphics specialists and artists can enhance the photo and do a lot of "touch up" work to get rid of excess weight, wrinkles, imperfections and etc.
Also, you have to realize you look better on special occassions (like your wedding or prom) than you do in real life. It's all in presentation.

Ok just imagine how good you would look if you had 10 people doing your hair and make up and fixing all your flaws and another 10 people fixing the picture and all the flaws the first 10 people missed........Now go look in the mirror at a normal person. That's the difference.

Because they ARE celebrities, and have people that do their makeup and hair. Don't think they really look like that in person. Plus, they do airbrushing too. Like in Playboy, I saw a show where they were talking about how they always do it.
