In the Northern Hemisphere, the shortest DAY is when the sun crosses the Equator or the WINTER SOLSTICE. This year it's Thursday, Dec. 21 when the Sun rises at 7:11 am and sets at 4:15 pm giving a total of 9 hrs., 4 mins. of daylight.

This would make the DARKEST MONTH from Dec. 6th through January 5th the DARKEST MONTH if you are counting 30 days as a month.

For the length of days where the days are darkest, would be generally the month of December.

December in the Northern Hemisphere.
The shortest day of the year is the winter solstice, on or about Dec. 21st each year. December has the least amount of sunlight per day of all the months.
