First things first: to find more accurate information, it's better to use the scientific name of a species in your web searches. The name of the dodo is Raphus cucullatus (although it was originally described as Didus ineptus), and it belonged to order Columbiformes, like the doves and pigeons.

As a Columbiform, it shares the diagnostic features for the order (try looking that up). In particular, it was a large flightless bird that inhabited the Mascarene Islands, in the Indian Ocean.

Interesting tidbit: there was another Columbiform in the Mascarene Islands that also went extinct, the "solitaire" (Pezophaps solitaria)
