I heard about that - it's pathetic that people in a demotcratic society have to be bribed to vote.

Yes, I would vote if given the chance to win a million dollars. Then again, I'd vote without that chance, because that's what democracy is all about. Is it an effective way to get non-voters to the polls? Probably, but that's not the right question. The right question (not just for Yahoo! Answers but for any government considering this move) is whether it's an effective way to get people to *think* about their voting. And the answer to that is almost certainly No.

I can see it now - hundreds, thousands suing the Government for potential fraud in fixed lotteries. It wouldnt even have to be true! People would do anything to get their mitts on a million bucks.
I think something more American would be to have a lottery where there are 1 grand prize of lifetime of tax free status! and a dozen or so smaller prize winners that get a year or two tax free (including emediate family members like a spouse or common-law wife) and forgiveness of any past due taxes owed.
But thats me just thinking out loud.

I might nonetheless vote my moral sense. But if the query had been to be, IF I might difference my allegiance from Democrat to Republican for $10 million greenbacks, you are damned proper I might, and might even vote for the corpse of Adolph Hitler ---------- keep in mind, one million guy, one million vote. If I had the vigor and used to be used to be supplied $10 million to position in McCain, and the choice is to are living out my existence the identical as I am with Obama, I might installed Obama, given that I'm no longer that egocentric. Yes it would get people who don't care about Government to vote, but if they don't pay attention why do we want them to vote.

It would work, but why would we want to do this? It's pretty sad that getting people to vote comes to this.
